16mm presentation - Clyfford Still Museum and Denver Film Society delve into the summer’s programmatic theme of music, movement, and modernism with an evening of short films by avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren. Like the Abstract Expressionists, Deren (1917-1961), who was also a choreographer, dancer, poet, writer, and photographer, was known for a radical aesthetic, the exploration of timeless ideas, and innovations in her medium. Join Clyfford Still Museum staff for a post-film discussion that explores the intersection of visual and conceptual interests between Deren and Still lead by Melinda Barlow, Ph. D.
Melinda Barlow, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Film Studies at the University of Colorado,
Boulder, where she received the Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence in Teaching Award. A film historian who also researches the art of mentoring women, she is the editor of Mary Lucier: Art and Performance (2000). Professor Barlow is currently writing a book on film, female identity, and art collecting titled My Museum: A Memoir in Art, which includes the essay “Who Was That Masked Woman? Rediscovering the Hidden Mother,” published last year.
