The Photography of Diane Victoria Flores

Over the years, Diane Victoria Flores captured one of our favorite subjects on film: the neon signs of Colfax. Many of these signs are no longer in existence, so if it weren't for Diane, we'd never get to see them! Thanks!!

She also creates one of a kind and limited edition jewelry (www.wadibijou.com). Eventually she plans to put together work for a show featuring the neon sign images, but that is tentatively scheduled for sometime in July.

Save the Signs: Dale Sawin

On Saturday, May 24th, Dale Sawin walked the entire length of "America's longest, wickedest street" with his hand-made Save the Signs flag. Starting at 7 am in Aurora where East Colfax crosses I-70, Dale made it to Golden later that night in the rain. He even waited out a tornado warning at Casa Bonita.

Here's what Dale had to say about the adventure: "It was always a bucket-list idea to walk America's longest street. But helping raise awareness for Save the Signs seemed like the right thing to do while I walked. It was truly one of my favorite days ever."

The photos in this album are courtesy of Dale Sawin and were taken during his epic walk. (courtesy: Save the Signs)

311 at The Fillmore Auditorium

Fillmore Auditorium
August 5

Live Nation and Bill Bass Concerts are pleased to present 311 at The Fillmore Auditorium on Tuesday, August 5.  Special guests TBA will open the show.
Show time is 8:00 PM.  Doors open at 7:00 PM

311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and bassist P-Nut. The band now resides in Los Angeles, California.

311 mix rock, rap, reggae and funk into their own unique sound. After years of consistent touring, 311 have developed a reputation as one of the hardest working, most influential and most entertaining live bands in the U.S.

311 have released ten studio albums, one live album, one greatest hits album and three DVD's - and have sold over 8.5 million albums in the U.S.  Seven of their albums have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart ... and nine of their singles have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Rock Radio Chart.

311’s 11th album STEREOLITHIC was released on March 11 and features 15 new songs.  Don’t be surprised if 311 fans rabidly discuss whether to hail the collection as a return to signature-sound form or a stylistically diverse breakthrough. True to its twin-tone name, STEREOLITHIC manages to be both.

Capitol Hill Project: Colfax Marketplace

If you looked closely at the map from the September 2013 Residential Boom Update, you may have noticed there are a couple of projects we haven’t covered yet here on DenverInfill. Today, we are going to look at one of those projects; a new 74-unit apartment building, named Colfax Marketplace, going up in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. This project will be situated on the southeast corner of Colfax Avenue and Corona Street. Here is a map with the project site outlined.

Here is a conceptual rendering of the project courtesy of KTGY. Even though this isn’t the final design, this apartment building will have a modern design with brick and stucco for the exterior materials. Since the Colfax Marketplace will face Colfax, which is zoned as a main street, there will be ground floor retail along the entire building.

Right now on the site there is an old 3-story building, that used to house Smiley’s Laundry, and a parking lot. Recently, Slipstream Properties, the developer of Colfax Marketplace, bought the 3-story building and will be renovating both the 28 apartments and the 7,000 square feet of already existing ground floor retail space.

Units in the 3-story building will be a combination of studio and one-bedroom units ranging from 400-600 square feet in size with monthly rents between $800-$1000. Unit sizes and pricing are not yet available for the new 5-story building which is expected to break ground in March 2014 with completion in the Fall of 2015. East Colfax is going through a huge transformation and each infill or adaptive reuse project is helping restore what Colfax used to be; Denver’s Main Street.

ColfaxMarathon_RoadClosureMap

More than 16,000 athletes are anticipated to participate in the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon on Sunday, May 18, 2014. To provide a safe environment for the 2014 Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon, the cities of Aurora, Denver and Lakewood will have temporary traffic impacts along Colfax Avenue. While travel will be restricted, normal traffic patterns will resume as soon as it’s safe for athletes, spectators and motorists.

General Traffic:
  • The marathon will have full and partial closures of westbound and eastbound Colfax from Aurora to Lakewood starting as early as 3 a.m. and ending as late as 1 p.m.
  • Roads that cross Colfax Avenue and 17th Avenue could experience significant delays.

The runners return to Colfax Avenue at Glen Moor Drive, heading east, remaining in the westbound lanes of Colfax Avenue.

Save the Signs: Eddie Bohn's Pig & Whistle

You may have noticed the Pig'n Whistle property on West Colfax has been fenced off. There are plans to turn the property into a marijuana dispensary. Currently, we're working with the West Colfax Business Improvement District and the property owner to ensure the sign gets saved.

This sign is historic, iconic and needs to be preserved. Eddie Bohn started his empire on West Colfax in 1924 with some cash he earned sparring with Jack Dempsey. The Pig saw numerous celebrities in the years that followed and remained a popular destination until the interstate highway system effectively choked off the businesses on Colfax. By the time Clint Eastwood filmed a scene there for the movie "Every Which Way But Loose" in the late 1970s, The Pig was already in decline. This sign and the old gas station building next to it are all that remain of Eddie Bohn's empire. Hopefully, they will remain for many years to come. (Courtesy Save the Signs)

Recent renovations of the building have uncovered other signs with historical significance:

TEXT opens today at DAVA

TEXT

This exhibition explores communications systems across time and cultures.  Through text and images, DAVA youth explored past and current ways of messaging, culminating in stories described through a variety of print/3d media.  Works by guest artists Rick Griffith, Joel Swanson and Xi Zhang add different approaches. The exhibit opens May 16th with an opening reception from 4 to 7:30 pm and a spoken word performance by Molina Speaks at 4:30 pm. The exhibit will be open to the public until June 28th. DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts) is located at 1405 Florence St., one block south of East Colfax in the Aurora Cultural Arts District.

After examining the history of communication, DAVA middle school age students used typewriters, texting abbreviations, stop motion and digital animation to tell stories. Younger students inscribed personal stories with drawings and words on hand built clay stelae, drawn selfies, ideograms, and words on wood panels. Visitors will also be able to write messages using ceramic emoticons to share their impressions during the exhibit.

Guest designer Rick Griffith introduced the concepts of typography and communication to DAVA students.  A selection of Griffith’s prints created with the letterpress will be included in the exhibition. Xi Zhang’s series of paintings represents people taking selfies within traditional settings, mixing old and new. In his digital media pieces, Joel Swanson uses abstract shapes to communicate through Braille and keyboard keys.

This exhibit is free and open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday or by appointment. For more information, please e-mail gallery@davarts.org

Downtown Aurora Visual Arts is a nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to strengthen the community through the arts with youth as its primary focus. For more information about our programs, visit www.davarts.org, or call DAVA at 303 367 5886.
