The Devil Makes Three coming to the Fillmore Auditorium

Ones To Watch / Skype Present
THE DEVIL MAKES THREE
Special Guest Joe Pug
Fillmore Auditorium
Saturday, January 24
Showtime 9:00 pm / Doors 8:00 pm

The Devil Makes Three
With a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues, The Devil Makes Three is a breath of fresh musical air. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio – consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean – brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm.

Sourcing blues and throwing in fierce finger-picking guitar, a little slide, tenor banjo and rocking upright bass, The Devil Makes Three create a multi-spanned bridge between musical styles. Their vocal harmonies wind tightly around original songs and breathe life into favorite covers. It all pours forth from a timeless pulse that pulls you to the past, flies you to the future and lands you on the dance floor.

The three band members are from Vermont, where Bernhard and McBean played in a few rock and punk bands, but found their most exciting common ground in old blues and country-styled acoustic music. When Bernhard and McBean caught up with Turino in Santa Cruz, CA, she learned bass and the band was born.

Since releasing their first album in 2002, The Devil Makes Three has played nationwide to raving, capacity crowds whose enthusiastic support has guaranteed the band a sizable and loyal following.

Fine Art, Bad Food

The shopping mall housing the legendary Casa Bonita has recently been sold to new owners, and along with a new name (Lamar Station Plaza) and some new tenants, could we make one small request? You've got the Disneyland of Mexico part down pat Mi Casa, but the menu could sure use an upgrade!!

Colfax History: The Boardwalk at Coney Island

The Coney Island in Bailey, Colorado is a 1950s diner shaped like a giant hot dog, with toppings. The building has been called "the best example of roadside architecture in the state" by Denver historian Tom Noel.

The bun is 35 feet long, and the hot dog 42 feet; the entire building weighs 18 tons. The diner has indoor seating, courtyard seating and riverside picnic table seating.

The Boardwalk at Coney Island was born at 4190 W. Colfax Avenue in Denver in 1966. The first owner, Marcus Shannon had intended to start a chain of eateries around the concept, and obtained a patent for the design, but they had gone under by 1969.

In 1970, under new ownership, the stand was moved to the Rocky Mountain town of Aspen Park, along U.S. 285. Initially called Coney Island Dairy Land, it later dropped the last part of the name. Despite initial opposition, when it was put up for sale in 1999, a local campaign began to designate it a landmark and save it from destruction. The present owner purchased it for about $150,000 and added a state-of-the-art water purification system, a new secondary kitchen area and a complete restoration of the interior kitchen.
The popularity of the stand was such that its last day open in Aspen Park, "the waiting line extended literally for miles".

On March 18, 2006, to make way for a bank, the stand was moved again, 17 miles down U.S. Highway 285 to its present location in Bailey, close to Pike National Forest.

10 Aurora Stereotypes That Are Completely Accurate

#4. Aurorans Love To Get Down And Dirty On East Colfax

Source: Flickr user pams pics
Colfax Avenue was once referred to by "Playboy" magazine, expert on all things naughty, as "the longest, wickedest street in America." East Colfax, which runs through Aurora, has done little to belie this bad rep throughout the years. It's known for its dive bars and cheap motels (some renting rooms by the hour), and is a haven for purveyors of illegal substances and ladies of easy (and affordable) virtue. The No. 15 bus, which many Aurorans ride to work, is notorious for being the ride from hell, so much so that it even inspired a song by Jonny Barber called "The Dirty 15."

The Chase Motel

The Chase Motel, at 17250 West Colfax Avenue (courtesy the Colfax Museum Collection)

This is pretty cool. The Chase Motel has since been converted into a town home community. They tore through the floors and sectioned them off to make multi-floor layouts. Every upstairs bedroom has a patio since it used to be entrances into the upper floor motel units.

afrikmall | Something Big is coming to Aurora, CO

What is Afrikmall?

Afrikmall is a place that Africans living in Colorado can call home, providing a range of business services, as well as cultural, community and social opportunities and events. There are many thousands of Africans living in Colorado, from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and other African countries.

What will Afrikmall offer?

Afrikmall will provide the best of African business, entertainment, products, services and cultural experience to the general public. This may include African restaurants and cuisine, a grocery store, a coffee shop, a beauty salon, art shops, clothing retailers and business office space, along with an event center and a cultural center. It is also envisioned that Afrikmall will also house a credit union or bank.

Who is behind the project?

Cobina Adu Lartson, Ph.D., is the CEO of Afrikmall, and also a science educator with Denver Public Schools; Edward K. Mensah is chief operating officer of Afrikmall and executive director of TMG Global; Albert K. Quartey is the chief financial officer of Afrikmall and also a supervisor with Unicircuit Inc.; Emmanuel K. Eliason is Afrikmall's chief business development officer, as well as the president and CEO of Eliason Consulting Group; Seth Assabil, Afrikmall’s chief of facilities, works in security.

Where is it located?

Afrikmall will be located at 10180 E. Colfax Ave. in Aurora, in a 56,281 square-foot building on three floors. Afrikmall, LLC, the management company overseeing Afrikmall operations, has a long-term lease on the property, which was purchased by 10180 E. Colfax, LLC, an ownership entity created by Colorado-based Northstar Commercial Partners.

Why was that area selected?

The Downtown Aurora location provides proximity to thousands of expected visitors to Afrikmall. Afrikmall is located within the Aurora Cultural Arts District on the Colfax corridor, in a radius that includes the Stapleton and Lowry developments, and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical.

When will it open?

A groundbreaking is expected soon, with remodeling in the spring and a grand opening expected in the Fall of 2014. For current update click here.

Cactus Motel

This is a view of the Cactus Motel at 10574 East Colfax Avenue in Aurora, Colorado. The building was constructed around 1965 with an office near the street and a single row of rooms that extended towards the back with the car port adjacent to the office. The building was red brick and had green trim. A rounded decorative overhang was above the front office and had seven beams extending beyond the roof line. There was a satellite dish attached to the roof of the front office. Signs on the cactus read "Cactus Motel" "Vacancy" and "Weekly Kitchens", and a neon sign in the shape of a tall saguaro cactus was in front of the building on Colfax Avenue.

The Cactus Motel sign was an iconic part of the strip, one of the last classic signs to fall to the times. Gone, too, is the aging motel that has been razed to make way for new businesses as growth of the Anschutz and Fitzsimons campuses spread down Colfax.

PIERCE THE VEIL & SLEEPING WITH SIRENS ANNOUNCE
LEG TWO OF "THE WORLD TOUR"
30 Additional U.S. Dates Confirmed, Set to Kick Off January 23

With more than half of "The World Tour's" Leg One already sold out, Sleeping with Sirens and Pierce The Veil announce Leg Two of their five-month, multi-leg, co-headline global trek, and Rockstar Energy Drink is on board to present all dates.  PTV and SWS will alternate the closing spot, and Leg Two support acts will be announced shortly.  VIP Packages and limited pre-sale tickets are available now at www.theworldtour.info.

"The World Tour" represents the first time PTV and SWS have toured together since Pierce The Veil's completely sold-out "Collide With The Sky" 2012 headline tour, and both bands will be releasing brand new albums in tandem with the 2015 dates.  "We're definitely going to be playing new songs on this tour," said Fuentes.

PTV has been sequestered in a New York recording studio for the past two months and the still untitled album will see an early 2015 release.  Said PTV's bassist Jaime Preciado, "We don't just play metal or just play punk, or any one kind of music, but we cross and mix different kinds of music to make our own sound.  The new music reflects that, it has a little bit of everything, some of it's heavy, some of it's fast, it definitely has the Pierce The Veil stamp, but it's all brand new."

Sleeping With Sirens has been preparing for the release of a brand new album. This past August, fans that attended a special, intimate show in London took part in the filming of a music video for a new single to be released this fall.

TICKETS GO ON SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4 @ 10:00 AM
at the Fillmore Auditorium Box Office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or call 800 – 745 – 3000.

Tickets are $29.50 GA ADV and $35.00 GA DOS plus applicable service charges.

The Fillmore box office is open Monday - Friday from 12:00 Noon - 6:00pm & Saturdays from 10:00am - 2:00pm.  On days of Fillmore shows, the box office is open from 12:00 Noon – 9:00pm.

About Pierce the Veil:

San Diego's own Pierce the Veil - Vic Fuentes (vocals/guitar), Mike Fuentes (drums), Tony Perry (guitar), and Jaime Preciado (bass) - has emerged as one of the fastest-rising young bands on the post-hardcore scene, manifested by the rocket-ride success of the band's 2012 release, Collide With The Sky. Debuting at #12 on Billboard's Top 200 chart, Collide With The Sky has sold nearly a quarter-million copies in the U.S. alone, and the music video for the track "King for a Day" (featuring Sleeping with Sirens' Quinn), has racked-up an astounding 32-million YouTube views. In 2012, PTV performed on the Main Stage for the entire Vans Warped Tour, and then went on to sweep the Alternative Press Readers Poll taking awards for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Live Band of the Year, Cover Art of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Best Band Merch, Best Drummer and Best Bassist of the year. This year, marking the inauguration of AP's Music Awards, PTV has received seven nominations including Artist of the Year and Best Live Band.

In 2013, the band's music video "King For A Day" was awarded "Best Video of the Year" at the Kerrang! Awards, and earlier this year, the band's critically-acclaimed documentary "This is a Wasteland," picked up a Revolver Golden God statue for Best Film & Video. PTV has been sequestered in a New York-area studio since June working again with producer Dan Korneff (CWTS) on their fourth album which will be released in early 2015.

About Sleeping with Sirens:

Sleeping With Sirens released their latest album, Feel, in 2013 which garnered a #3 debut on Billboard's Top 200 chart. Aside from playing to the biggest crowds each night on the main stage at Warped Tour for the past two years, Sleeping With Sirens has sold out numerous headlining tours worldwide. The group has been featured on numerous print magazine covers worldwide, including Kerrang, Rock Sound, Alternative Press, and Blunt. The band was named Alternative Press' Artist of the Year in 2013 and is nominated in 4 categories for the Alternative Press Music Awards this year, including "Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" and will also be performing.
