Colfax Community Network Newsletter: July 2012

What’s Happening Now @ CCN - Summer Camp update

CCN Summer Camp kids are enjoying many new and exciting things. Swim lessons, field trips and lots of fun have filled the weeks for our campers. Here they are with Denver's Deputy Mayor, Cary Kennedy after listening to a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama at Arapahoe HS in Littleton.

Hunger-Free Duo!

Colfax Community Network is proud to announce our new partnership with Hunger-Free Colorado!  Funded by the USDA and directed by the Colorado Department of Education, Hunger-Free Colorado is providing fresh and healthy meals (breakfast and lunch) four days a week to kids up to the age of 18 at locations all over Colorado. We at CCN are feeding over one hundred kids each day. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer for this exciting new collaboration, please contact Mary Pritchard at  Mary@colfaxcommunitynetwork.org for scheduling and information; it’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself with diversity while acting as a figure of hope and happiness for Aurora kids this summer.

A Bus to Move Them All

Due to changes to our usage of the Aurora Public Schools bus, CCN has decided to purchase a new bus!  Priced at $8,000 dollars, we are currently appealing to generous donors for help.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Anschutz Foundation we have managed to raise $5,000 dollars so far and just need an extra push to reach our quote in time for the fall school schedule.  This bus will provide transportation for our after-school and summer programs and serve as a truck-like loading vehicle for our food and outreach operations.  Whether you’d like to donate directly to us on our website, or by attending one of our various summer fundraisers listed above, any contributions made to ensure safe and reliable transportation for our kids for the next decade is greatly appreciated.

A Big Old Fashioned Thank You!

As customary, CCN would like to thanks those who have gone above and beyond this summer to assist our efforts.  We Don’t Waste deserves a huge thank you because of their weekly delivery of food, specifically the fresh produce. Once a week, the generous folks at We Don’t Waste drop off a collection of appetizing food for our families to enjoy, from apples and bananas, to artisan breads and packaged snacks.  Living Water Church is also pitching in to ensure our families have enough to eat, providing canned and packaged foods to replenish our Food Bank.
Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection (D.O.O.R.) and Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM) have been blessing during our summer sessions as well, volunteering with our kids’ Art and Olympics segments.  St. Barnabas and Rotary Club (Denver Southeast) were kind enough to host our past two Family Nights, allowing us to focus our efforts towards fundraising for a new bus and the upcoming fall schedule.
Renaissance Hotel and Holiday Inn on Quebec and Colfax have helped us tremendously in keeping pace with the high demand of hygiene products this summer.  Thanks again to you all for helping us continue the excellence we strive to provide!

CCN’s Office: 10,000 Times Better

As an update to our last newsletter, the office space of Colfax Community Network has seen a dramatic overhaul over the last two months. As a part of Concert 4 Kids’ Annual Community Day, we were fortunate to receive renovations! The much-needed overhaul includes new carpet in the two main offices and children’s library, a remote-control linked door bell, new light fixtures and kitchen cabinets, and painting of our classroom floor.  Furnished by Oakwood Homes, we would like to send an extra thank you to all those from Concerts 4 Kids and Oakwood Homes for making our work space respectable and efficient!

Upcoming Events!!!

Splash, Flash and Meet! – Saturday, July 14th @ Finn McCool’s from 12-4pm

Local Centennial bar Finn McCool’s is repeating their charitable efforts of 2011 by hosting the Splash, Flash & Meet Fundraiser!  Located at Arapahoe Rd. and 1-25 in Centennial, from noon to 4pm on Saturday, July 14th, the bar staff of this neighborhood bar has agreed to participate in a car meet and bikini carwash with proceeds going to CCN!  Not only will there be bikini-clad gals there to wash your car, but a licensed photographer will be on hand to “flash” a professional picture of your car with an enchanting model, just like in the magazines!  Scandalous Couture brand swimsuits will be on display and for sale and a portion of all car-related sales (wash/photos) will go to helping us prepare for our final summer session and fall expenses.  Happy hour priced food and beverages will also be available during the carwash and meet, so join us and the lovely ladies of Finn McCool’s for some fun in the sun for a good cause! Because of the slightly mature nature of this fundraiser, we ask that all participants exclude any under aged children during the event.  Thanks and we hope to see you and your vehicles on the 14th!

Save the Date!

The Colfax Community Network’s Annual Fundraiser is coming!  “Cheers for Children,” sponsored by Colorado Auto Dealers Association, is this year’s theme, where food, beverages and beer (whose?) will accompany live music, performed by Gumbo LeFunque, at CADA’s Speer location(?).  Friday, September 28th has been selected as the date, though the hours of the event have not been decided yet; be sure to regularly check our website and stay tuned to subsequent newsletters as we iron out the details of this highly anticipated affair.
