"I have always been fascinated and a little frightened of Colfax. I was
born in Denver, and we drove by these signs when I was a kid. We moved
to the mountains when I was 4. I often drive Colfax all the way from my
parent's house in Aurora to I-70 because I find it relaxing and it is a
good way to get out of town during rush hour. I wanted to do all my
favorite signs while they were still up. I prefer to work from my own
pictures and show things as they are existing now, in my day.
Everything becomes "vintage" and "history" before you know it, anyway.
I hope to make some paintings, too, but I thought this medium, linoleum
cuts, was a great choice for this subject matter." - Artist Elizabeth Kurtak
