MGMT coming to The Fillmore Auditorium

MGMT
Fillmore Auditorium
Friday, September 6

Live Nation is pleased to announce that MGMT will perform at The Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, September 6.   Special Guest TBA will open the show.  Show time is 9:00 PM.
Doors open at 8:00 PM
Cosmic forces were at work when MGMT's co-founders, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser met over ten years ago at Wesleyan University. Drawn together by a mutual love of mystic paganism, the duo signed to Columbia Records in the eve of 2006. On a mission to sprinkle the music industry with weirdness and unpredictability the band delivered their debut album "Oracular Spectacular" in 2008. The record garnered the band three Grammy nominations, along with numerous accolades across the globe, including landing at #18 on Rolling Stone magazine's Top 100 albums of the decade.

2010's "Congratulations" was conceived even before "Oracular Spectacular’s release! The "musically adventurous" eclectic mixture of tracks may have sounded a little confusing to some, but that's only because MGMT's unconventional pop structures reflect the chaotic vibrations of the world -- and who can realistically make sense of that? "Congratulations" debuted at #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 in the UK, going on to become one of the most talked about albums of the past decade.

Performing live as a five piece, MGMT continue to entertain through multiple TV appearances (including covering Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam" on Jimmy Fallon while decked out in hardened fisherman's gear), a steady stream of music festival performances around the world, curating the latest edition of the "Late Night Tales" music compilation, and remaining precocious and curious under-30 wunderkind. Via their recorded music medium, the endlessly experimental and spontaneous duo have stayed true to their precarious nature.

In November 2011, MGMT performed two nights at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, creating a unique musical performance to coincide with the opening of Maurizio Cattelan's career retrospective All -- an installation of over 100 art pieces dangling from the museum's ceiling through its legendary inner spiral space.

Last year MGMT conquered South America with their live show and in September Ben and Andrew performed as a two-piece for the first time in a decade, as part of the legendary Joshua Light Show. Listening in on the universe's stream of consciousness for inspiration, the duo are currently completing the third MGMT album due for an early summer release. As a band that exists in its own space and time, and is constantly defying expectation, there is no saying what magical gifts MGMT will bestow.

RTD Driver of the Month: Eric Holcomb

Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to Route 15 bus driver, Eric Holcomb. The 15 travels east and west on Colfax Avenue from downtown Denver to 17th and Chambers.

His nomination was submitted by Lisa Barr, who was impressed with Eric’s concerns for safety and his friendly approach.
"Eric is by far the BEST bus driver I have ever had with RTD. He is open and genuinely friendly to everyone coming onto his bus. He jokes around in an appropriate way, and drives very safely (he’s never slamming on his breaks). He has an awareness of safety and even tells me to be safe when I exit the bus. I’ve never felt so safe on a 15 bus than I do when he is driving. I take this route Tuesday – Friday going home from work. I smile all the way home thinking of his great sense of humor and the consistent pleasant experience he gives all the passengers on his bus."
After receiving the commendation from Lisa, we wanted to know more about Eric and he graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions.
How long have you worked for RTD and have you always been a Bus Driver?
I have worked for RTD for 12 years, and have always been a driver.

What were you in a previous life?
I joined the army when I was 20 years old and started my military career as part of the air defense artillery (shooting down airplanes from the ground), and retired as a Staff Sergeant. In the mid 90’s I drove soldiers around in a bus and loved it. After retiring from the army I drove a city bus in Akron, Ohio until I came back home to Denver and started working for RTD.

What do you like best about your job?
The best thing about driving is the people. Driving the bus up and down Colfax is an exciting challenge all by itself, but the best part is all the interesting people I get to see or meet. I always try to have a positive attitude, and deal with everyone and every situation in a positive way. Dealing with so many attitudes, personalities, and moods is what makes driving Route 15 the most interesting job in the world.

If you could listen to music while working, what type?
I would listen to R&B (old school like Earth, Wind and Fire), jazz (Kenny G, Al Jarreau), rap (Eminem, Jay Z), and pop (Adele, Cold Play)

If you could deck out your train, what style?
The outside of my bus would be decked out with a wrap of the Earth, Wind and Fire album cover “Last Days in Time”. Inside the bus would have strobe lights and disco balls, and the music would definitely be old school 70’s and 80’s.

If you could change your uniform color, what color or does brown/gray go with your eyes?
I spent more than 20 years in the military, so I’m a uniform man. I like the brown uniform and I really like the new black and grey uniforms.

What type of service would you drive if given the choice and/or favorite service to drive or operate?
I drove different routes my first year with RTD but none as interesting as the 15. I will probably drive the 15 the rest of my time at RTD and of course, I will stay driving at night.

What are your favorite hobbies or activities?
My hobbies are buying and listening to CD’s, and then downloading songs I like onto my IPod. I also enjoy reading books – autobiographies of famous singers like James Brown and Aretha Franklin, and spy novels by Robert Ludlum.

The four-day, free admission, food, music, and entertainment Festival will take place Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30  through Sept. 2, in Downtown Denver’s Civic Center Park.

America first formed in 1970 with original members Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. The trio delivered such hits, including “A Horse with No Name,” “Sister Golden Hair,” “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” “Daisy Jane,” and “Lonely People.” America won a Grammy for Best New Musical Artist in 1972.

In 2007, the band released a two-CD set, “Here & Now,” comprised of one studio record of new material and a second live disc featuring renditions of songs found on the group’s multi-platinum album, “History: America’s Greatest Hits.” America’s follow-up, “Back Pages,” was released in 2011 and covered songs from artists including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and the Gin Blossoms. The group was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, and Beckley and Bunnell continue to collaborate with other artists and perform over 100 shows each year across the country.

In addition to the Main Stage, four other entertainment stages located throughout the Festival will serve up a continuous menu of music featuring rock, country, jazz, blues, and ethnic music and dance groups.

Shoppers also can explore the Home & Lifestyles area, which features a variety of exhibitors displaying products and services such as window installation, kitchen remodeling, cookware, basement refinishing, and salons and spas.

There will be plenty of music, magic, clowns, and puppets on the Comfort Dental KidzStage, and the KidZone features play equipment and hands-on craft activities. Kids and adults also can enjoy carnival rides and games Saturday through Monday.

In the Festival of Mountain and Plain area, families can learn about the state’s pioneer past, nature, and the environment. Featured artisans will demonstrate Navajo weaving and culture, spinning, rug braiding, lace crocheting, felting, and quilting, along with the popular blacksmith demonstration. Sprouts Will Open on East Colfax on July 10

Sprouts Farmers Market on East Colfax now has an official opening day of July 10 the company announced. The 25,000 square-foot store between Garfield and Monroe streets, just west of Colorado Boulevard, will be the third Sprouts in Denver. The store will serve as a key anchor of revitalization in an area in need of a grocery store.
“The neighborhood has grown so much with livability but the fact you can’t get grocery stores in reasonable distance is a real gap. This takes the place and makes it a real solid neighborhood,” said Sean Mandel with Rosen Properties. The Rosen family – in partnership with the Evergreen Development Company – owns the property occupied by Sprouts.
Mandel added that based on when construction began, the store is opening ahead of schedule. He credited Sprouts for working hard to get the store open.
The store will open at 7 a.m. on July 10. Amenities of the store include a soup/olive bar and sushi bar as well as Sprouts bulk items. Approximately 100 people have been hired to work at the store.
“We’re excited to be part of the Colfax neighborhood,” Sprouts President and CEO Doug Sanders said in a press release. “We’ve become part of metro Denver, and are looking forward to meeting our new neighbors and becoming part of this community.”
Opening day festivities include free coffee and muffins for those in line between 5 and 6:30 a.m., a ribbon cutting at 7 a.m. and a grocery bag giveaway to the first 200 shoppers.
