Railroad Earth
When Railroad Earth started out in 2001, they were a bunch of guys interested in playing acoustic instruments together. As Railroad Earth violin/vocalist Tim Carbone recalls, “All of us had been playing in various projects for years, and many of us had played together in different projects. But this time, we found ourselves all available at the same time.”

Songwriter/lead vocalist Todd Sheaffer continues, “When we started, we only loosely had the idea of getting together and playing some music. It started that informally; just getting together and doing some picking and playing. Over a couple of month period, we started working on some original songs, as well as playing some covers that we thought would be fun to play.” Shortly thereafter, they took five songs from their budding repertoire into a studio and knocked out a demo in just two days. Their soon-to-be manager sent that demo to a few festivals, and – to the band’s surprise – they were booked at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival before they’d even played their first gig. This prompted them to quickly go in and record five more songs; the ten combined tracks of which made up their debut album, “The Black Bear Sessions.”

That was the beginning of Railroad Earth’s journey: since those early days, they’ve gone on to release five more critically acclaimed studio albums and one hugely popular live one called, “Elko.” They’ve also amassed a huge and loyal fan base who turn up to support them in every corner of the country, and often take advantage of the band’s liberal taping and photo policy. But Railroad Earth bristle at the notion of being lumped into any one “scene.” Not out of animosity for any other artists: it’s just that they don’t find the labels very useful. As Carbone points out, “We use unique acoustic instrumentation, but we’re definitely not a bluegrass or country band, which sometimes leaves music writers confused as to how to categorize us. We’re essentially playing rock on acoustic instruments.”

Ultimately, Railroad Earth’s music is driven by the remarkable songs of front-man, Todd Sheaffer, and is delivered with seamless arrangements and superb musicianship courtesy of all six band members. As mandolin/bouzouki player John Skehan points out, “Our M.O. has always been that we can improvise all day long, but we only do it in service to the song. There are a lot of songs that, when we play them live, we adhere to the arrangement from the record. And other songs, in the nature and the spirit of the song, everyone knows we can kind of take flight on them.”

Sheaffer continues: “The songs are our focus, our focal point; it all starts right there. Anything else just comments on the songs and gives them color. Some songs are more open than others. They ‘want’ to be approached that way – where we can explore and trade musical ideas and open them up to different territories. But sometimes it is what the song is about.”

New Brewhouse, Taproom Planned on East Colfax

Introducing Fiction Beer Company! Founders Ryan and Christa Kilpatrick are combining their mutual love of craft beer and books to create a neighborhood brewery in East Denver. Fiction Beer Company will offer a variety of craft beers inspired by their favorite works of fiction and will include classic styles, seasonal favorites and experimental specialties. Fiction Beer Company has leased commercial retail space in the Phoenix on the Fax building at the corner of East Colfax Avenue and Pontiac Street. The founders have retained an architect to begin drafting brewhouse and taproom plans. Fiction Beer Company’s grand opening is expected in mid-2014.

Fiction Beer Company will help to fill a void in the Denver craft beer market. Denver has seen tremendous growth in the small craft brewery segment over the last five years; however, the growth has been primarily in the former industrial locations of River North, Sante Fe Arts District, West Denver and other areas that are less accessible to those who live in the eastern Denver neighborhoods of Park Hill, Stapleton, Lowry, Mayfair, Montclair, Hale and Hilltop. The location for Fiction Beer Company near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Quebec Street straddles these neighborhoods and for most of the residents will be the closet brewery to their homes. Fiction Beer Company will be easily accessible to these neighborhoods via car, bus, bike or by foot.

“Combining our two largest passions into one singular vision is a dream come true for both Christa and I,” said Ryan Kilpatrick. “We have been talking about opening a brewery since 2009, but it wasn’t until 2013 that we began to seriously pursue the possibilities. When we began to envision the experience we want to provide to our customers, we soon realized that what we wanted more than anything was to provide a comfortable place to enjoy craft beer with our friends, neighbors and families. We want our brewery to be as familiar to our customers as their favorite book. We want our customers to enjoy craft beer with us again and again while still being able to find something new each time, just as you do with your favorite book.”

“Fiction Beer is a place where beer geeks and book dorks can revel in their respective geekiness. But it is also a place where beer novices can feel comfortable learning about beer,” said Christa Kilpatrick. “We look forward to inviting our neighbors in and offering them a relaxing family friendly environment. The taproom will be a laid back sort of place where people can hang out and play a board game or read a book while drinking beer(s).”

Fiction Beer Company will open with six beers on tap, four Classics and two Adventures (seasonal). Two Fantasy/Sci-Fi (experimental) rotating beers will be added to their lineup in the near future. As the grand opening approaches, the brewery will announce the details of a membership program designed to get craft beer lovers involved in the process of making the beer they love. While full details have not been released, the membership program does promise to put full control of recipe creation in the hands of the members. The program is geared towards homebrewers but all are encouraged to participate.

Quotes from our Fearless Leader

Schuyler Colfax quote: "It seems as though all the devils were let loose on me; and if you think this is an exaggeration, ask anyone you meet who has lived in my district."

Overheard on Colfax Avenue

OVERHEARD ON COLFAX, at The Holiday Chalet Bed & Breakfast: "This looks like where all the Bulgarians hang out." "I think you mean BOHEMIANS, dear..." We later found out this fine observation belonged to Terry Worthington of Central Florida; his wife made the correction.

"Colfax you are Leroy's favorite place to boogie! Leroy always feels free to be funky when he's strutting down your sidewalks!...Keep it funky because Leroy needs the funk!" -- Leroy Whitman

Lori Midson of SUNSET MAGAZINE said "East Colfax enchants...and is now a great place to dine and shop!"
