AURORA | An “escaped” federal prisoner suspected in two metro-area bank robberies was arrested Monday at a motel on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora.
AURORA | An “escaped” federal prisoner suspected in two metro-area bank robberies was arrested Monday at a motel on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora.
Robert Gilmour Estes, 59, was arrested at about 10:30 a.m.
at the Radiant Inn near Colfax and Joliet
Street, according to a statement from the U.S. Marshals
Service.
According to the FBI, Estes failed to report to a federal
detention facility Oct. 15 and was later charged with escape. After he failed
to report, the FBI said Estes robbed a US Bank in Denver
and another in Englewood.
Marshals last week asked the public for help in finding
Estes and on Monday tracked him to the motel in Aurora.
“Thanks to the hard work and dedication our
fugitive-investigators, this violent bank robber is now again in custody where
he no longer poses a risk to the community,” Marshals Chief Deputy Kenneth Deal
said in a statement.

Historic Denver Guide: East Colfax Avenue
Explore the Historical development and significant buildings of Denver’s East Colfax Avenue.
By Laurie Simmons and Thomas H. Simmons
Photography by Kathleen Roach
To get your fill of the East Colfax scene, squeeze into Pete’s Kitchen at 1962 East Colfax Avenue with the crowds craving its abundant breakfasts, cheeseburgers and Greek specials. Pete Contos, the owner, came to the U.S. from Greece in 1955 and created an eight restaurant empire. Contos is said to have introduced gyros to the city and has been instrumental in the development of “Greek Town”, a section of the Avenue east of Colorado Boulevard. The neon sign at Pete’s Kitchen is considered a classic, as is that of the Satire Lounge to the west.

New Route 40 Mixed-Use Development
Slipstream Properties, KTGY Bring Rehab and Development to Denver’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood
By Joshua AyersSlipstream Properties is poised to capitalize on the resurgence of Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood with the development of its Route 40 community, a mixed-use property comprised of an existing three-story, 1930s era building and a new five-story mixed-use structure. The development is located on East Colfax Avenue between Corona and Ogden Streets.
The existing 1930s-era building is the former home of Smiley’s Laundromat and Cleaners and was purchased by Slipstream in October of 2012 for $2.73 million. The classic Denver building features 28 completely refurbished units that range in size from 400 to 500 square feet for studios, and 500 to 600 square feet for the one-bedroom floor plans. All units in the building will include high-end kitchens and bathrooms, large windows and original hardwood floors, while the first floor will offer 7,000 feet of retail space.
Leasing for that building is expected to begin later this month, but Slipstream has also started development on an adjacent property at the corner of E. Colfax and Corona. That .68-acre development, designed by KTGY Group, will add 74 more units and 8,300 square feet of retail space to the neighborhood. Apartments at the second building, which will include a property management office, will range in size from 470 to 658 square feet. Amenities will include a second-floor courtyard and deck, laundry room, fitness center, extra storage and a rentable guest suite for visiting family and friends of residents.
“Although the vacant Smiley’s Laundromat and Cleaners building was in disrepair and was a gathering place for some of the less desirable citizens of Denver, Slipstream Properties saw the potential in the location as well as an opportunity to help clean up a section of the Avenue,” says Michael Ohara, AIA and principal in KTGY Group. “KTGY is very excited to be a part of this revitalization project.”
The project will cost about $12 million and construction will start on the new building in March of 2014 with the goal of delivering the first units for lease in fall of 2015.
Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, boasts a Walk Score of 90 due to its close proximity to retail, restaurants, grocery and entertainment sources, and it also features reasonable access to transit centers and offers great cycling conveniences. The neighborhood’s northern border, Colfax Avenue or U.S. Route 40, served as the primary road to the Rockies during Denver’s early days and was once lined with mansions. Interest in the area shifted after the construction of Interstate 70 in the 1960s. It has been only recently that developers have shown an interest in the area.
“The new interstate, coupled with a renewed American sense of postwar mobility and movement to the suburbs, left Colfax Avenue behind as a place of years gone by,” Ohara says. “There are festivals celebrating its history and, a change in lifestyle has people moving back to the city core.”
Ohara added that the renovations to Smiley’s and the construction of the new building are going to add an updated look to the area but that there will be a “continuation of the street-level retail/commercial spaces in the existing building.”
The new building’s brick, stucco and “cementitious” panel siding will aim to blend classic Denver architecture with modern flair.
“The combination of giving an 80-year-old building a new life next door to a brand new, modern, five-story mixed-use structure makes this project unique,” says Anthony Loeffler, a principal with Slipstream Properties. “KTGY Group, with their experience in adaptive re-use of existing buildings and multifamily housing has been instrumental in this process of designing both buildings to create a cohesive, yet timeless look.”

It's Not Your Grandfather's Road Trip!
Looking For
Redfeather; A 21st Century Novel About Three Runaway Teens in
the American West.
Fiction House, Ltd. announces the publication of Looking for Redfeather, a novel by award- winning author, Linda Collison, who studied History at Metropolitan State University, worked as a registered nurse at Denver’s Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, and raised three children in Denver.
Author's Note: "A portion of the novel takes place in Denver. And what would a road trip novel be without something happening on Colfax? A scene takes place in Tom's Diner. Like Jack Kerouac, I have a fascination for that iconic avenue -- but this ain't Jack Kerouac's road trip! "

Fifteen-year-old Ramie Redfeather hitchhikes out
of Cheyenne, looking for his father, a man he’s never met. Seventeen-year-old
Chas Sweeney has taken his grandmother’s vintage Cadillac Eldorado and fled
Maryland, looking for sentient life on a barren planet. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Faith Appleby,
who has changed her name to Mae B. LaRoux and bought a fake I.D. with money she
nicked out of the church collection plate, has left her home in Baton Rouge and
is on a westbound Greyhound bus, guitar in hand, looking to win the break-out
blues contest in Austin. The three teens
meet by chance in Denver, where a good portion of the story is set, and head
out on a road trip to the Austin Music Festival, looking for the elusive
Redfeather on the way.
The novel’s themes include the meaning of family
and a sense of belonging, surviving trauma, economic disparity, genetic
differences, and coming of age in the 21st century. The teens are on the road but it’s not
Kerouac’s road they travel.
Linda Collison’s first novel, Star-Crossed,
published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2006, was chosen by the New York Public Library
to be among the Books for the Teen Age – 2007.
Her coming-of-age manuscript With a Little Luck won the former Maui
Writers Conference Grand Prize in 1996.
Born in Baltimore, Linda moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming
when she was twenty-four, where she lived
for five years before moving to Denver to work as a registered
nurse. In the early 1990’s Linda and her
husband Bob Russell co-authored two guidebooks, Rocky Mountain Wineries; a
travel guide to the wayside vineyards (the first guidebook on the subject) and,
Colorado Kids; a statewide family outdoor adventure guide. Both books published by Pruett, of Boulder,
Colorado. Collison met her husband of 21 years in Loveland, Colorado where they
both taught skydiving at Skydive Colorado.
The two later moved to Hawaii where they bought a sailboat and sailed to
Polynesia. They now divide their time between Colorado and Hawaii –when they’re
not on the road.

Bystanders tackle man with gun at Denver Burger King
DENVER – Good Samaritans at a Denver fast food restaurant jumped to a security guard’s rescue Tuesday night, tackling a man to the ground after he pulled a gun on a security guard.
Police confirmed the incident took place at a Burger King near the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Kalamath Street in the heart of downtown Denver.
Witnesses say that after a security guard told a man to leave the restaurant, the man became a suspect, pulling out a gun and pointing it at the guard. That’s when onlookers reportedly stepped in.
“Me and some bystanders helped rush him (the suspect) and take him to the ground,” witness Joseph Sanchez said. “That’s when he was apprehended.”
As customers grabbed the suspect, witnesses said another security guard came to their aid.
“He (the security guard) tased (the suspect),” Sanchez said. “He (the suspect) was tased until he gave up his gun – until he stopped resisting. It could have been very tragic because there were a lot of family and kids around.”
The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital in custody. Police said the man is a felon and should not have had a gun.

Ignite Theatre presents "Avenue Q" Puppet Musical
Book by Jeff Whitty; Music & Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx
Directed by Bernie Cardell
Music Direction by Trent Hines
Choreographed by Kelly Van Oosbree
Directed by Bernie Cardell
Music Direction by Trent Hines
Choreographed by Kelly Van Oosbree
"Avenue Q" is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more?) and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life!
Photo: Suzanne Simone |
Director Bernie Cardell returns with the original award-winning 2011 Denver cast Keith Rabin (Princeton), Carolyn Lohr (Kate/Lucy the Slut), Patrick Brownson (Trekki Monster), Mark Shonsey (Nicky), Steffan Scrogan (Rod), Arlene Rapal (Christmas Eve), Eric Fry (Brian), Anna High (Gary Coleman), Paul Jaquith (Bad Idea Bear/Puppeteer), and Leslie Randall Chapman (Bad Idea Bear/Mrs. Thistletwat/Puppeteer).
"Avenue Q" is an autobiographical and biographical coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. The characters lament that, as children, they were assured that they were “special” and “could do anything;” but, as adults, they have discovered to their surprise and dismay that in the real world, their options are limited. They also discover that they are no more “special” than anyone else. This musical is notable for the use of puppets (Sesame Street-style), who are animated and voiced by actor/puppeteers who are present, unconcealed onstage, but remain “invisible” relative to the storyline.
"Avenue Q" won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score with innovative and originals songs like "It Sucks to Be Me," "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," "The Internet is for Porn" and "What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?"
