Musicians in Action

I am always honored to lend a hand to anyone making a difference in people's lives and willing to actually get their hands dirty and pitch in for a great cause, and yesterday that distinction would go out to Musicians in Action, who presented an amazing lineup of bands at the GLBT Center on Colfax from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Last night was the closing night for the first (I hope there will be more) Root 40 Music Festival on Colfax Avenue, and Musicians in Action really did their part!

From musiciansinaction.org: "We are mobilizing the underutilized (musicians) to aid the underprivileged (Colorado's homeless).

M.I.A. is an all-volunteer nonprofit that hosts a variety of events to raise awareness and resources for those society has left Missing In Action (Colorado's homeless population). M.I.A. hosts shows across genres, across the calendar and across the metro area. Join us for a show?

Musicians In Action is dedicated to assisting all of the homelessness agencies in Colorado. Through fund raising events, special collaboration projects and volunteerism M.I.A. seeks to bring awareness to these important organizations. We primarily serve the following agencies: The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, The Empowerment Program, The Gathering Place, Senior Support Services and Urban Peak. But M.I.A. strives to work with many local agencies to raise awareness and resources."

Facebook page: "A HUGE THANK YOU to the great bands that played our outdoor stage yesterday: Side Of The Road, Synergy, SuperSeed, Gription, MF Ruckus/White Fudge, Hot Apostles, FTP Band, The Hits, The Pirate Signal, and Nemesys! We couldn't have been more proud of the stage talent & diversity!

And a big thank you to Open Stage Denver for providing an awesome sound system! Please check them out at www.openstagedenver.com. And thank you, Colorado Audio, for providing a great stage!"

Cinco de Mayo Festival 2012

This Saturday, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of a heroic people and their struggle for freedom. On May 5, 1862, in the town of Puebla, the outnumbered Mexican army defeated French forces providing the momentum to drive foreign power from their country. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of freedom and culture and acknowledges the beauty of Latino culture. The Denver Cinco de Mayo event is produced by nonprofit organization NEWSED Community Development Corporation and Santa Fe Drive Redevelopment Corporation.

Their mission is, “To promote and develop economic, arts and cultural, and community programs that increase income and education levels, and political engagement of Denver area residents. This year we celebrate our 39th year as an organization and 25th Anniversary of the largest Cinco de Mayo Festival in the United States."

This spring, two prominent new ‘Fax businesses – Ace Hardware and Fairfax Wine & Spirits at Marczyk’s Fine Foods – are collaborating with The Fax Partnership for a wine tasting fundraiser. All proceeds from “The ‘Fax Uncorked” wine tasting will support a new façade improvement program, which provides matching funds for businesses to update East Colfax storefronts.

Area residents, business and community leaders are invited to visit the new Ace on The Fax store, located at 7100 E. Colfax Avenue near Poplar Street, for a special wine tasting on Thursday, April 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the newly renovated space and taste over 20 wines from around the world, selected by Fairfax Wine & Spirits. Light snacks will be provided by the Cork House Broker restaurant.

Guests can also save up to 15% on wine ordered at the event for pick-up and purchase at a later date. Fairfax Wine & Spirits will generously donate 5% of all wine ordered at the tasting to The Fax Partnership for the façade improvement grant program.

Bellco Colfax 5k Race

Join us for the 2012 Bellco Colfax 5K on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. The event takes place in Denver’s City Park, and kicks off the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon weekend with a race for everyone- with a start and finish at the official Marathon Start and Finish Line. It’s a chip timed race, where seasoned runners can strive for a PR, or newer runners can  jog and walk at their own pace.

The Bellco Colfax 5K has a separate start wave for walkers, kids and families, and a one mile shortcut. Awards for the top ten male and female finishers (based on gun time). All participants receive a race t-shirt, music, and delicious finish line food provided by Garbanzo's.

“Bellco and its employees are committed to identifying positive ways in which we can help improve both the financial and physical wellness of the communities we serve,” said Deirdra O’Gorman, Vice President of Bellco Credit Union Customer Relationship Management. “This wonderful event promotes fitness and health in a positive and fun way for kids and families.”

Kids Running for Charity
The race welcomes local charities to participate in the DaVita Charity Partners program, where nonprofits recruit runners to raise funds for their cause. Kids under 12 who raise $50 or more for one of our 2012 Charity Partners get a FREE entry to the Bellco Colfax 5K through the High Five Youth Fundraising Program, sponsored by Primrose Schools.

The 5K distance is appealing to charities focused on children, like Whiz Kids Tutoring, which provides after-school, one-to-one tutoring program for disadvantaged students throughout the Denver Metro area.

“The distance was perfect for us to have our volunteer tutors run with their students,” said Jedidah Frederick, Program Administrator, Whiz Kids Tutoring.

"Our race mission is to encourage a healthy and fit community, and provide a distance for everyone," said Andrea Dowdy, Executive Director of the race for the third year.

Online registration is open at www.runcolfax.org.
