Denver: Gay Haven of the West?

This is a reprint of an article first published in Gaysweek Magazine, March 26, 1979. "The rise in prostitution was attributed to Denver's growing stature as a convention city. The Capitol grounds have been used as a gay cruising area longer than anyone can remember..."

  1. What makes places like Denver special is the sense of community they can offer LGBTQ+ people. Having somewhere to go out, meet new people, make friends, and feel comfortable being yourself is something that shouldn't be taken for granted. A welcoming city is about more than just its bars and nightlife; it's about the people who make others feel accepted and the spaces where everyone can be themselves without fear of judgment. It's also great that there are more ways to connect beyond local communities, whether through shared interests or platforms like Sniffies App. Hopefully, Denver will continue to nurture its LGBTQ+ culture and remain a place where everyone feels they belong.
