This is the interior of Swedborg’s Grocery, a long-time Aurora business
located near the corner of Colfax Avenue and Dayton Street. Arvid and
Margie Swedborg opened the store in the 1920s and operated it until the
late 1950s. Advertisements listed the grocery as “the biggest little
food store in town” and promoted the quality food, attention to detail,
and free delivery. Local residents also remember Swedborg’s as a popular
gathering place for friends. Downtown Aurora featured a number of
grocery stores and markets – do you remember Swedborg’s, Piggly Wiggly,
or any of the other stores on Colfax?
In 1952 I was a tiny toddler. Mom and I would walk down the 4 blocks to Swedborgs Grocery to get some food. I don't remember much about the store but I seemed to be very large inside. I do remember they would deliver to our house using cardboard boxes. Sadly all the small grocery markets are long gone. Giant chain stores have taken over the landscape. I still remember when things were very different. Small was beautiful!
